High Plains Museum
High Plains Museum - Home of America's First Helicopter - Established in 1959, the High Plains Museum is owned and operated by the City of Goodland. In 1979 an addition was added to house a full-sized, automated replica of America's First Patented Helicopter. The High Plains Museum's collection of over 8,000 objects lets adventurers of all ages discover the past. Exhibits range from the Ice Age, Pioneer Life, the Depression, the Dust Bowl, Rainmakers, old office machines, filling station displays, a 1902 Holsman auto, six exceptional dioramas of the Kidder Massacre, and a replica of America's first patented helicopter. Permanent exhibits tell the story of the individuals and groups who have lived here -- from the pioneer family in their sod house to the businessman in town. While enjoying your visit be sure to stop by the High Plains Museum's store and browse the fine selection of gifts and souvenirs.

Kidder Massacre Site
Kidder Massacre Site - The Kidder Massacre Site is where Second Lieutenant Lyman S. Kidder, eleven soldiers, and their Sioux scout were wiped out by Sioux and Cheyenne warriors on July 2, 1867. Kidder was carrying messages to Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer, and Custer is the one who found their bodies ten days later. The Kidder Massacre Site's monument is located on land owned by Kuhrt Farms down an unnamed county gravel road (R-28). The actual site is on the north side of Beaver Creek, which is on private land, but there is usually a farmer out and about that will nod approval to walk further. Visiting the Kidder Massacre Site is a great way to add some historical intrigue into your camping trip.

Mount Sunflower
Mount Sunflower - Mount Sunflower is the highest point in Kansas, but don't expect the Alps. This unique point of interest is a half mile east of the Colorado border in Wallace County and has an elevation of 4,039 feet. Mount Sunflower consists of a gently sloping hill of shortgrass prairie. Visitors will see a variety of western wildlife including pronghorns, mule deer, coyotes, black-tailed jackrabbits, and the swift fox. The most visible birds include horned larks, vesper sparrows, and western meadowlarks. Fun-loving visitors fill the register with comments typical of mountain climbing adventurers. There is a picnic shelter, so bring the family and a picnic and enjoy your pastoral view from the highest point of Kansas at Mount Sunflower!

Giant Van Gogh Painting
Giant Van Gogh Painting - The Giant Van Gogh Painting is part of the Big Easel Project, which began in 1996 as a tribute to Van Gogh's public domain painting and to the cities that have a connection to sunflower agriculture. Goodland is the third city to receive this honor. The project features a reproduction of one of Van Gogh's seven sunflower paintings. The painting took approximately six weeks to complete with 10 to 12 hour work days and stands on an 80-foot easel. The Giant Van Gogh Painting serves as an internationally recognized symbol of art. When complete, the project is expected to be included in the Guinness Book of World Records. The Giant Van Gogh Painting is a unique attraction for visitors not to be missed.
